Confidentiality and GDPR

As a British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) member I adhere to a strict code of confidentiality.

I’m required to look after your personal information by law.

Paper notes are kept in a lockable fireproof filing cabinet.

The retention period for patient records under section 8 of the BAcC Code of Professional Conduct is a minimum of seven years. In the case of patients under 18 years of age records must be kept until the patient reaches the age of twenty-five (seven years after reaching eighteen). This applies even when you have referred the patient on, or you have left the practice where you administered the treatment.

The records shall be kept for at least 7 years following the last occasion on which treatment was given.  In the case of treatment to minors, it is advisable that records should be kept or at least 7 years after they reach the age of majority (18).

Patient notes are never kept indefinitely. You need to have a written policy and a process for ensuring that you destroy patient records once your retention period has expired.

If your patient notes are stored on a computer or in the Cloud, you need to take all necessary steps to permanently delete those records at the end of the retention period.
